| Bio: | Character Name(s): Simon Curtis Gender: Male Race: Human/Nymph (unknown what percentage exactly, at least a quarter) Actual Character Age: 17 DOB: April 17th Physical Description: Lanky and getting taller every day (about 5'10" currently), looks a bit underfed, pale "indoor" skin, dark brown hair, greenish blue eyes. Distinguishing marks: None PB: Paul Dano Birth Location: Cullman, Alabama Personality: Shy, quiet type that typically comes from an overly religious upbringing. He's polite, well mannered and often has no idea as to how adorable he is being. Sometimes Simon is obedient to the point of having no free will, but sinec his seperation from his mother he is trying to be more assertive. So far, no luck. He enjoys the kind of things typically quiet boys like- reading, watching movies, and listening to lite/christian rock. Sometimes his shyness and inexperience can be mistaken for naivete, but Simon observes the world in his own quiet way and has a better understanding of life than most mature adults. He prefers to be outside more than inside, although often he steers clear of large bodies of water. Personal Background: Simon Curtis was born on a bleak rainy night in April at around 3am, Central Time. Because of his mother Adrianne's strictly holistic beliefs (and distrust of modern medicine), he was born in the house where he would grow up with the assistance of three family midwives. Simon's childhood was as typical as could be expected until shortly after his third birthday. His parents were sitting in their backyard one summer evening around a small fire, watching the night come and listening to the sounds of crickets coming out from the tall grass. Simon kept creeping toward the fire pit despite his mother's warnings, as toddlers will. After awhile, Adrianne noticed that as Simon approached the flames, they would shift in the direction he was coming from, as though reaching for him. Assuming it was merely a wind change, she moved her son away from the fire and around the other side of the fire pit. But because Simon still watched the flames, they kept reaching for him as though his eyes could pull them off the kindling they burned and into the night air. Properly freaked out now, Adrianne rushed her son into the house and ordered her husband to put out the flame. As the months progressed, Adrianne became assured that Simon had a touch of the devil in him, for why else would flame reach out to take her son from her? Already a devout Fundamentalist Christian, she avowed to seek the answer for Simon's salvation in the church. Her panic quickly became obsession, then lunacy, and by February of the following year, before Simon turned four, Arliss Curtis had decided he'd had enough. He slipped away in the night without notice or warning, and neither his wife or child have heard from him since. It was a dark secret he had kept from his wife and family for years- he, too, could manipulate fire. But Arliss hadn't discovered his abilities until his teenaged years, when he knew enough to hide them and had enough control to do so. He had hoped against hope that his freakish talents would die with him, that if he repressed them well enough he could squash them from his DNA. Seeing his first (and only, that we know of) child cursed with his powers was too much for Arliss to bear. He did not want the responsibility of raising a child with secret powers, just as he had had to keep his powers a secret. So in spite of the guilt he would carry with him forever about leaving Simon with a woman who could never understand, more afraid that eventually someone would uncover his secret, Arliss Curtis said goodbye to his wife and child. Maybe, he hoped, Adrianne's prayers would save his son. Adrianne blamed Simon, of course, convinced now more than ever that the devil within him had driven her husband away. As Simon aged he became more aware of his ability to manipulate fire, although he couldn't seem to control or understand how or why he could do what he did. There were only two things of which he was sure- one, that fire did not scare him as it did other children in his school, and that he found himself to be most content when he was out of doors. His father had liked to take him on fishing trips, as Arliss too seemed to prefer nature to society. Life was smooth enough for awhile, despite Adrianne's sincerest beliefs that her son was Lucifer incarnate and that she seemed to be shredding her once passionate faith into a terrifying madness. Most days after school she would have Simon practice his "curse" to see if perhaps her prayer, research or sometimes beatings could get the devil out of him. (On more than one occasion Adrianne tried to drive the fire from his soul by immersing her son in water for long persiods of time. Simon now seriously hates water.) Having been raised never to lie, Simon simply couldn't fake not having his abilities anymore, so the tests never satisfied his mother. As Simon matured he started attracting the attentions of the female sex. This might not have been so bad, except like most teenage boys, he also became interested in sex and masterbation. And thoroughly convinced that all Simon's actions were the devil's work, Adrianne decided to lay the smackdown on his hormonal impulses. He was to be home schooled, he would sleep in the same room as Adrianne, and they would pray together twice a day. Now while it may seem that having been raised with a crazy mother would permenantly damage a teenage boy, life wasn't as drastic as Adrianne's illness would make it seem. Simon was sheltered, sure, but he was also a well educated, polite and witty child. While at school he had made a few friends, and even though he didn't participate in school actvities, he would play sports with his friends and go to movies (with parental approval) and lead a relatively normal teenage life. This all stopped in his senior year of high school when Adrianne pulled him from the school so he could be taught at home. This wouldn't have been so unusual, except that none of Simon's school friends could seem to contact him. Adrianne never allowed Simon to leave anymore, and no one heard a word from the boy for months. Finally a concerned teacher called social services to see what had happened to Simon. Long story short, Simon was taken into custody because it had become obvious that Adrianne's paranoia and possible schizophrneia had become too debilitating for her not to be hospitalized. Simon was relocated to Halcyon Halls, where he might begin an education and understanding of his fire abilities. But a magical accident at the school forced Simon to relocate. Since he is not yet a legal adult, his guide at Halcyon decided he should be transferred to another magical school, Tiberius J. Swann Detention Facility. Family: Mother- Adrianne Curtis, religious fanatic Father- Arliss Curtis, out of the picture since Simon was four. (deceased) Weakness: Not a strong swimmer and fears drowning (for reasons other than fire being his element). Is highly affected by cold. Magical Abilities: Has the ability to "pursuade", but not entirely control, small flame. For example, he could transfer a flame from a match onto a piece of paper next to it, but there was no guarantee it would hit the paper and not some other close-by flamable object. Any Training: Rigorous "exercises" of making flames dance to see if "the devil has yet been beaten from you". Special Skills: Extensive knowledge of Fundamentalist Christianity? Roommate: Vinnie Vallario ***Simon Curtis is a fictional character made for the sole purpose of an online RPG community. He is in no way affiliated with Paul Dano or, ironically, Simon Curtis.*** | |||||||||
